Consultation Workshop on Competencies for Trainee Marine Pilots
PDF Print E-mail

The National Marine Safety Committee will be seeking public comment on the draft national standard on Competencies for Trainee Marine Pilots.

The document was delivered in response to an initiative of the Australian Maritime Group (AMG). Traditionally, Master Mariners with suitable command experience have been recruited as marine pilots because of their background and their familiarity with this profession. This recruitment source is rapdily diminishing and there is a need to develop an alternate pathway.

The draft standard and its accompanying Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) were developed with the help of a Reference Group including representatives from the State and Territory Authorities, Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), Australian Marine Officers Union (AMOU), Australian Marine Pilots Institute (AMPI), Port Authorities, Shipping Australia, Australian Maritime College (AMC) and other stakeholders.
