CONFERENCE UPDATE - Issue 3 July 2003

Fishing industry deaths fall

A high-light of the conference will be Dr Peter O'Connor presenting the findings of the first national study into boating fatalities. At last year’s conference Dr O'Connor presented the preliminary findings from Phase 1 of the study. Now twelve months later Dr O'Connor has completed his study, involving the detailed analysis of more than 300 fatal incidents covering recreational and commercial boating in Australia between 1992 and 1998.

The study has exposed some interesting facts around boating fatalities including the fact that there has been a substantial decrease in commercial fishing fatalities over the last 17 years. Other topics that will be covered in this world-class paper include the role of lifejackets in saving lives, alcohol and drug use in recreational and commercial fatalities, types of vessels most frequently involved in fatalities, and common causes of boating fatalities.

A risky debate!

Day two of the conference will kick off with a debate between industry and government over who should be responsible for safety. A lively, entertaining and thought provoking event

Recreational boat safety

Recreational boat safety is one of the major themes in this year’s conference, and will feature its own stream of speakers throughout the conference.

Attention boat builders!

The new Australian Builders Plate will be featured on day 1 with a paper by Sherry Donaldson of the Australian Marine Industries Federation looking at the impact on industry of the introduction of this standard.

In addition Thomas Hale from America will talk about European and American standards for recreational boat building.
