Research is used to create new knowledge and deals with a variety of problems, attitudes and opinions. With research an attempt is made to investigate why certain things happen, why people behave the way they do, the effects of the policies we make, just to name a few.

Research and data have been important areas for the NMSC since it was formed in 1997. NMSC's research focuses on understanding marine safety problems and issues through the integration of different kinds of knowledge (scientific/technological, social, cultural, political and economic). This knowledge is used to improve the quality of the NMSC's standard writing, policy and legislative activities.
 
The Research Framework
Research within the NMSC is guided by the National Marine Safety Research Framework which incorporates the following principles:
  • an integrated approach to research
  • an evidence based approach to marine safety initiatives
  • a more robust approach to measurement, evaluation and risk management, and
  • stronger national and international collaboration and information sharing of marine safety research.


NMSC’s research is implemented in three primary steps, or key research functions:
  • establishing a research agenda (research planning)
  • managing and overseeing individual research projects (project management)
  • capturing, organizing, and delivery research results (knowledge management)
  • analysing and writing up research results
As a national body, NMSC is in the unique position of being able to foster greater co-operation and collaboration between the various state bodies and institutions that are currently engaged in maritime safety research across Australia.
