Snapshot 2005-2006

During the two calendar years 2005 and 2006, there were 3077 marine incidents resulting in 88 fatalities and 633 injuries.

It is estimated that there are approximately 700 000 registered vessels in Australia, consisting of:

  • 680 000 recreational vessels
  • 20 000 commercial vessels

In 2006 there were 1577 recorded incidents on Australian waters, a slight increase from 2005, which had 1500 recorded incidents.

Of the 3077 reported marine incidents:

  • The largest number occurred in the summer months (33%), while the least number occurred during winter (20%)
  • 65% of incidents took place between 9am and 6pm.
  • A collision of vessels made up 21% of all incidents, followed by unintentional groundings, which made up 16% of all incidents.

Of the 88 fatalities:

  • Most occurred in clear weather conditions (82%).
  • Approximately 55% were a result of a boat capsizing or a person falling overboard
  • 91% were male
  • At least 9% had a contributing factor of alcohol or drugs
  • Recreational vessel fatalities accounted for 80% of all fatalities
