Vessel Lengths

Out of total vessels involved in incidents in 2005 and 2006, the largest number involved those between 7.5 and 23.9 metres in length. This group represented 35% of all vessels involved in incidents. The next largest group involved vessels under 5 metres in length, making up 33% of all vessels.

Across all vessel length groups except for those over 24 metres in length, collision of vessels was the largest incident type. Capsizings were more prevalent in shorter vessels while vessels over 24 metres in length had a significant proportion of collisions with fixed objects.
