Help Make Boating Safer

Take Part in the National Boating Usage Study

We are inviting keen boaters to be part of a world first study on recreational boating usage. The study starts in September 2008 and will run through to May 2010.

By volunteering, you will help us to better understand boating behaviour. A key area for marine safety research and policy development is determining how the amount of time spent boating is linked to incidents. By being involved in this study, you will be helping us to develop national policies and strategies to improve boating safety.

Win Great Prizes!

As a volunteer, you will automatically -

  • Be in the running to win some great prizes.
  • Receive up to $100 off boating insurance with Club Marine Insuranc.
  • Receive 40% off a 12 issue subscription to any marine publication from Yaffa Publishing.
  • Receive regular news and updates on research findings.

What’s Involved ?

Once you sign up, all you need to do is fill in –

  1. A one-off survey that asks you some general questions about your boating behavior.
  2. A Boating Diary (on-line or in hard copy format) each time you go boating.

The diary only takes around 5 minutes to complete and helps us to collect information about your boat usage. All you have to fill in is this –

Outcomes of the Study

The study will allow the National Marine Safety Committee to collect a comprehensive set of data on boating exposure. It will allow for the identification of high risk boating periods, and boater risk in terms of the number of hours spent on the water. This information is vital to help marine agencies formulate policies to improve boating safety.

Four reports will be developed during the study to record data developments. One report will be produced from the preliminary survey on boating behaviour in addition to a 6 month, twelve month and final report. Volunteers will automatically receive a copy of each of these reports.
